In its drive to improve its portability, online music service Spotify has announced its plans to enter into a partnership with 3 UK to put its service on their new range of phones.
Spotify allows people to access music from a voluminous collection, though they can access it only if their friends invite them to join the community. With the increasing popularity of the service among regular mobile broadband users, Spotify has decided to broaden the scope of its application by making the service available to mobile phone users through its deal with 3.
Spotify has a quite limited customer base as of now, though a deal like this can expand its reach to cover remote areas as well. Since 3 has been the first operator to accommodate Nokia’s ‘Comes with Music’ scheme, users will be more than willing to accept the new service as well. According to Jeremy Paterson, MD of music consultancy company Frukt, the service holds potential to become mainstream in a short time.
The first launch from 3 with Spotify features is going to be the HTC Hero, which will hit the markets around Christmas. Other models with Spotify will be launched successively. Though the tariffs have not been declared yet, it is expected that Spotify will begin by providing its advert-free ‘premium’ (paid) service to the new users.

Rumours suggest that European Commissioner Viviane Reding is willing to continue with her post for the third stint in a row. This has not come as a welcome surprise for some of the internet service providers though.
Reding has been the mastermind behind enforcing the decrease in charges for data roaming that happened recently. The powerful telecom executive does not seem willing to take a break from her campaign of putting the UK in the forefront of the best broadband provider. She is also said to be attempting to hasten the already planned transition to digital TV even before the official date set for it, which would free up the spectrum for mobile broadband.
Reding spoke at the Lisbon Council in Brussels and expressed that the digital dividend could be used in a way that was not only helpful in connecting all parts of the EU with very high speed broadband but also in earning an additional 50bn for the European governments, if they managed to respond quickly. The step would also entail better broadcast as well as an expansion in the choices available for consumers in future.

On September 5, 1985, Ted Waitt and Mike Hammond used a $10,000 loan Ted Waitt got from his grandmother and created Gateway 2000, a computer hardware company. They used Waitt’s father’s cattle ranch in Sioux City, Iowa as the company’s first headquarters before moving to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and then to North Sioux City, South Dakota.
Born Theodore Waitt on January 18, 1963, Ted Waitt developed Gateway into a well-known company through creative advertising and direct marketing. The computer hardware firm was also popularized for using cow-spotted boxes in shipping their products.
In 1998, the company moved to La Jolla, California and the following year, Waitt stepped aside and passed his chief executive officer (CEO) role to Jeffrey Weitzen. However, he reclaimed his post in 2001 after Gateway’s sales and revenues dipped.
Now based in Irvine, California, Gateway, Inc. was acquired by Acer, Inc. in 2007. Waitt has remained a key personality for the company as its co-founder but he now spends most of his time working on the wholly-owned private investment company, Avalon Capital Group and the Waitt Family Foundation. The foundation supports projects related to domestic violence prevention, community development, and stronger families and societies.
Waitt is a constant presence in various Forbes Magazine lists. He is one of the country’s most generous philanthropists and is a Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA) awardee.

Data is sent in packets, which can arrive randomly long after they have been requested, without causing problems. Internet Protocol (IP) was designed to provide more efficient delivery. Telecoms companies had an expensive network in place, so there was a lot of incentive to use it. After a few misses Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) was created as a compromise technology that could carry both voice and data. However it’s much less efficient than a network intended purely for data. The overhead for data transfers on ATM is more than 10connection, compared to about one percent for an Ethernet running full-throttle.

I recall an era where laptops for gaming were a special breed. Even though they did not shift a great amount they still brought in the most in comparison to other styles of notebook computer. I work in an industry that has seen huge changes in the past 25 years. The technology in engineering has grown and changed so much that we are executing project with half (sometimes less) the manpower we needed before. I work mainly in the oil and gas industry but I know that in other areas it is possibly even more dramatic. I have been in engineering industry for 25 years and when I started computers were in a main computer room and there were only a few and only few people who could run them. They slowly started moving on to the desktop about five years later. I was hired mainly because I had taken CAD courses to upgrade my skills during an economic downturn. I ended up developing and teaching courses in AutoCAD for the company. From those simple beginnings we have come a long way.
Let me give an example of that change. The company I work for had a project for a client 30 years ago and we managed to get the second phase of the project 12 years later while I was with the company. The technology of the process had not changed much so the plant was almost a twin of the first phase. The first phase was executed on the drafting board the second phase was done using brand new 3D design technology called Calma developed by GE (this software is gone now). During the execution of the engineering many of the engineers and design supervisors commented that they only had half the people for phase two compared to phase one. Another comparison on this project was in the construction. 30 years ago it was not uncommon in our industry to have 15% rework in the field due to clashes between piping, structural and electrical. With the new 3D technology we were able use clash reporting to fix most of these clashes on the computer before construction. The rework in field came down to 3% on this project and much of this was due to pipes that were field routed and were not in the model.
Leap forward now to 2005. Another example is from an article I read in Design News magazine it was about the development of Lance Armstrong’s time trial bike. Trek’s Advanced Concept Group was given only 28 days to redesign the bike to make it faster. A group of 14 engineers and designers went work using desktop workstations and eight different software programs. Even 2 years ago a redesign of this nature would have taken them 4 months. They did everything in 3D using Solidworks 3D CAD. This allowed them to do virtual tests on everything form the wind tunnel to reduce drag, to stress analysis to ensure the bike was safe. Using software called thinkid from think3 they were actually able to deform the solid shapes and the software was able to redo to geometric calculations to accommodate the shape change and still maintain the integrity of the design. With this technology they were able to go straight into production knowing what they had designed worked because the model simulations proved it. They ended up with a bike that was 2% lighter, 10% faster, and 15% stiffer then the model they produced in 2004. Lance Armstrong proved it was better by winning the time trials and ultimately winning the Tour de France for a record 7th time. I doubt that a bike of this nature could have been produced in under a year 30 years ago using the same amount of people.
One of the main reasons for these advances in that the amount of RAM and speed of processing has increased exponentially. These new programs require huge amounts of memory and processing power due to their graphic and interactive capabilities. The new systems of today deliver that power (my workstation is now over 3 years old). 15 years ago I would load one design area of a processing plant. One design area might have represented 10% to 15% of the whole plant. Once I called up the design area it was time to go get coffee because it could take about 10 to 15 minutes to load, and you would pray it didn’t crash. Today I am able to load an entire process plant in solid model image in about one minute using Intergraph’s Smart Plant Review technology. The ability this gives me as a supervisor to check designs and make comments is invaluable, this technology increases our quality.
For engineers and designers the changes have been staggering, even in my 25 years of design work I have gone from producing a limited plastic model of an oil and gas plant to giving the client a virtual walkthrough of every detail of an oil and gas plant. We must constantly keep ourselves up to date with the latest technologies to keep a competitive advantage. Those who don’t keep up will loose the race.
